What TDI is
Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI, CAS 26471-62-5) is commercially produced as a mixture of two isomers — 2,4-TDI (CAS 584-84-9) and 2,6-TDI (CAS 91-08-7) — most commonly in an 80:20 ratio, the grade universally referred to as "TDI 80/20". A clear to pale-yellow liquid at room temperature, TDI's two isocyanate groups have different reactivity, which is precisely why it suits flexible foam: that reactivity difference gives formulators a wide, forgiving processing window well suited to continuous slabstock production.

TDI is a clear, pale-yellow liquid at room temperature (density around 1.22 g/cm3, boiling point approximately 251 degC), which is one of the practical reasons it suits continuous slabstock foam production — it can be metered and mixed as a liquid without melting or dissolving steps.
How should TDI be stored and handled?
TDI should be stored in sealed, dry containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from moisture, incompatible materials and ignition sources. It reacts with water, has a notably low occupational exposure limit, and requires appropriate ventilation, PPE and monitoring per its Safety Data Sheet — always consult the current SDS before handling.
