Behind every rigid, insulation-grade polyurethane foam is a polyol built from a high-functionality starter molecule. Why initiator functionality matters

Polyether polyols are made by reacting a starter molecule — the initiator — with alkylene oxides such as propylene oxide, building polyether chains outward from each of the initiator's hydroxyl (OH) groups. The number of OH groups on the initiator therefore sets the functionality of the resulting polyol, which in turn governs crosslink density: higher functionality gives the tightly crosslinked, rigid, thermally stable network that insulation-grade PUR and PIR foam depends on.

Why are sucrose and sorbitol used to make polyols?
Polyether polyols are made by reacting a starter molecule (the initiator) with alkylene oxides such as propylene oxide. The initiator's number of hydroxyl (OH) groups sets the functionality of the resulting polyol. Sucrose has 8 OH groups and sorbitol has 6, so both are used as high-functionality initiators for the highly crosslinked polyols that rigid, insulation-grade polyurethane foam needs.
What is glycerine's role compared with sucrose or sorbitol?
Glycerine (glycerol) has 3 OH groups, giving a lower-functionality initiator than sucrose or sorbitol. It is used on its own for semi-rigid or more flexible-leaning polyol grades, or blended with sucrose and/or sorbitol to fine-tune the average functionality and viscosity of a custom polyol blend.
Can I buy sucrose, sorbitol and glycerine as one package?
