Two importers can buy the same product at the same price and end up with very different landed costs — because one understood packaging and container selection and the other didn't. The wrong choice means paying for air, damaged or contaminated cargo, or a shipment held at the port for a dangerous-goods paperwork error. This guide explains how sulphur, PVC and plasticizers, polyurethane chemicals and quartz sand are actually shipped, and how to get it right.
The containers you'll encounter
Most chemical, polymer and mineral cargo moves in one of a handful of equipment types:

Notice the payload quirk: a 20ft container actually carries more weight than a 40ft, because the longer 40ft frame is heavier and eats into the allowance. That single fact drives most of the decisions below.
The rule that saves money: weigh out vs cube out
Every shipment hits one of two limits first. When heavy cargo fills the weight allowance before it fills the space, it "weighs out." When light cargo fills the space before the weight limit, it "cubes out." Knowing which applies to your product decides your container:
- Dense cargo — quartz sand, sulphur, PVC resin — weighs out. You'll hit ~28 tonnes in a 20ft long before you fill 33 CBM, so a 20ft container is usually the right (and cheaper) unit. Loading these in a 40ft just means shipping a half-empty box.
- Light or voluminous cargo — bulky packaged goods — cubes out, and a 40ft or High Cube gives the better cost per unit.
A product's specific gravity (density) is the tell. The heavier it is per litre or per cubic metre, the more likely you're weight-limited — and the more a 20ft makes sense.
Bulk packaging options
Inside those containers, product travels in one of these forms:

Liquids: flexitank vs ISO tank vs IBC vs drums
Liquid products — plasticizers, polyols, isocyanates — have their own decision tree, and it turns on three questions: is it hazardous, how large is the volume, and is the lane one-way or return?
- Flexitank — a single-use bladder that turns a 20ft dry box into a 16,000–24,000 L tank. Cheapest option (often a third of the alternatives) and great for one-way lanes — but strictly for non-hazardous liquids. Carriers prohibit dangerous goods in flexitanks.
- ISO tank — a reusable stainless-steel tank (21,000–26,000 L) in a 20ft frame. Handles hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, offers temperature control/heating, and gives the best contamination protection. Requires a cleaning certificate from the previous load — that's a pre-booking question, not a terminal one.
- IBC totes (~1,000 L) and drums (~200 L) — modular and reusable, ideal for smaller volumes or shipments split across several destinations, and available in dangerous-goods-approved specifications.
Rule of thumb for liquids: hazardous or high-purity → ISO tank; non-hazardous and one-way → flexitank on cost; small or multi-drop volumes → IBCs or drums.
How each product line ships
Quartz sand & silica
A dense, non-hazardous solid — the textbook "weighs out" cargo. It ships in 25/50 kg bags, 1–1.5 tonne jumbo (FIBC) bags, or as free-flowing bulk with a container liner, almost always in a 20ft box because you reach the weight limit first. Keep it dry (a liner or moisture barrier prevents caking), and remember that while quartz isn't a transport hazard, respirable silica dust is an occupational health hazard — handling and PPE matter at both ends. Sulphur
Also dense and 20ft-friendly, shipped bagged, in jumbo bags, or bulk. The key difference is that solid sulphur is generally a dangerous good — UN 1350, Class 4.1 (flammable solid) — so it needs the correct declaration, marking and a Safety Data Sheet. Some formed or granular grades may qualify for exemptions; confirm the exact classification on the SDS before booking. Bentonite and granular grades also need to stay dry to preserve free flow. PVC resin
A free-flowing powder, non-hazardous, shipped in 25 kg bags (often palletised and shrink-wrapped) or jumbo bags. It's moderately dense, so containers are typically weight-limited. The priority is keeping it dry and clean — moisture and contamination cause processing defects — so palletised bags with a liner, and desiccants for humid lanes, are standard. Plasticizers (DOP, DINP, DOTP)
These are liquids and, importantly, generally not classified as dangerous goods for transport. That opens up every liquid option: flexitank for large one-way volumes on cost, ISO tank where purity or reuse matters, and IBCs or drums for smaller or multi-destination orders. Polyurethane — polyols
Polyols are liquids and typically non-hazardous, so they ship by flexitank, ISO tank, IBC or drum like plasticizers. The catch is that polyols are moisture-sensitive — they absorb water, which throws off the polyurethane reaction — so packaging must be sealed and dry, and bulk tanks kept clean.
Polyurethane — isocyanates (MDI & TDI)
This is where it gets technical, and where the two isocyanates diverge sharply:
- TDI is a dangerous good — UN 2078, Class 6.1 (toxic). It must move in ISO tanks or dangerous-goods-approved drums/IBCs, with full DG declaration, marking and segregation — and it cannot go in a flexitank.
- MDI is usually not regulated as a dangerous good for transport, because of its low volatility — though this depends on the specific grade, so always verify on the SDS. Its practical challenge is temperature: MDI can crystallise or solidify in the cold, so it often ships in heated ISO tanks or insulated/reefer equipment, or in drums that are re-melted with controlled heat (never direct flame) on arrival.

Dangerous goods: the essentials
Sea freight of hazardous cargo is governed by the IMDG Code. If your product is classified, several things follow automatically from its UN number and class: the correct packaging standard, hazard labels and placards, the dangerous-goods declaration, stowage and segregation from incompatible cargo, and any marine-pollutant marking. A few practical points for this industry:
- Get the classification before you book — it determines packaging, documents and cost.
- The SDS is the source of truth for UN number, class, packing group and handling.
- Hazardous liquids can't travel in flexitanks — plan for ISO tanks or DG-approved drums/IBCs.

Temperature & moisture — the silent spoilers
Even non-hazardous cargo can be ruined in transit by heat, cold or damp:
- MDI crystallises in the cold — use heated tanks or insulated equipment on winter lanes.
- Polyols and isocyanates react with moisture — keep packaging sealed and dry.
- PVC, sulphur and quartz cake or clump if they take up water — use liners, sealed bags and desiccants on humid routes.
- Container "rain" (condensation inside the box) is a real risk on long ocean legs — desiccant bags and proper liners are cheap insurance.

Before you confirm a shipment: match the container to the cargo's density (dense → 20ft); confirm the dangerous-goods status and get the SDS; choose the liquid vessel by hazard, volume and lane; plan temperature and moisture protection; declare your Verified Gross Mass (VGM) as required under SOLAS before loading; and for ISO tanks, confirm the cleaning certificate up front.
